What is a Young Carer?

Sometimes young people are not aware what defines a 'Young Carer'. If you provide care to an adult or child in your family, you may be a young carer.

Young Carers do more in the family home than would usually be expected by a young person of their age. This might mean that you:

  • Do the shopping or manage household bills
  • Support someone emotionally
  • Help someone get washed and dressed
  • Provide medication to a family member
  • Help look after a brother or sister, managing their behaviour

How it can affect you

Being a young carer can take up a lot of your time and stop you joining in with groups and activities with your friends. It might mean that you find it difficult to:

  • Make friends, as you're unable to do anything after school
  • Concentrate in school and keep up with your studies
  • Get enough time to rest, play or just be yourself

If you feel you are finding things a bit hard, or you are worried about what will happen in the future — there are people and organisations who can help and listen to your worries and give support.

Speak to a youth worker at Level Two, a teacher, or an adult you feel comfortable talking to, and tell them how you feel.
